While All Saints’ Day is a minor observance in many countries, it is a truly major celebration in Croatia. And while many Croatians are Roman Catholic, Croatia is also unusual in that most non-Catholics will celebrate All Saints’ Day as well or at least visit the cemetery.

Organisations too, like police and fire departments, armed forces units, or mountain rescue groups, will visit the cemeteries on All Saints’ Day to pay respects to now-deceased co-workers.

The graveyards of Croatia will be blanketed with candles and flowers on All Saints’ Day as at no other time of year. Some of these cemeteries are very old and full of ornate architectural structures so that the overall affect of the massive decorations is quite stunning.
